qualified or not?

I am currently studying icb. I understand to be a bookkeeper and run a business you do not have to be qualified,  as long as you know what you are talking about, is that correct?

I will be looking to do self assessments along with the bookkeeping, what will I need to do? Register for money laundering? If I chose just to do this, self assessments , I don't need a certificate or qualification do I?

Hope someone can advise/help/explain.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Dee Dee,

You are right, to be a bookkeeper or accountant you don't need any qualifications.  As ICB member we are always striving to make the industry better and more sucessful for bookeepers and their cleints.  I believe it is only with proper qualifications and skills that we can deliver this.

When you are going out to sell your services either to an employer or to clients on a self employed basis the qualified bookkeepers will reap the rewards.  Just like you wouldn't let an unqualified doctor work on you, many business owners are becoming wise to the unqualified bookkeeper or accountant and passing them by.

You'll need to register for MLR regardless of whether you pass exams or not, but I remember the ICB being cheaper to supervise than HMRC directly.

You need to weigh up for yourself which is best, but I'm under no illusion that qualified is the way to go.

Hi Dee Dee

I agree with Kris. I would also add that you have 2 decide whether to be ICB or not and can't be half and half, what I mean by that is that if you do choose ICB and qualify say in bookkeeping, you cannot then do the self assessments without the extra qualification.  I do think this is a good thing though, (as with my driving text many moons ago, I actually didnt want to pass unless i was a safe driver), the same with bookkeeping and self assessment. I wish you every success whether you qualify or not, and has Kris says the practice license is about the same cost as the money laundering registration anyway.

Best of luck
