Hi everyone.  I have  a Self Assessment Tax Return to do and the guy is CIS registered.  He has completed a couple of course to work off- shore however he is registered as a joiner.  The course he completed amount to a couple of thousand pounds.  Can anyone tell me if I can put these through his expenses even though they don't relate to his current employment. The rule for training is that if it's a completely new skill then it's not allowable, if you're updating a skill then it is.  Remember that the wholly and exclusively rule needs to apply to every business expense.  In this case you say it's unrelated training so even if it was an update to an existing skill it wouldn't be allowable.

Thank for that. I thought that was the case.
