Hi

Was wondering if someone could help me. Is someone entitled to Maternity Allowance if they are set up as Self employed and exempt from paying Ni contributions due to the low income they are on? or do they need to start making voluntary ni contributions in order to be entitiled to it?

Thanks

Hi Zoe

This is an excerpt from gov.uk

You might get Maternity Allowance if:

Basically, if you have been paying NI class 2 contributions (or hold an exemption certificate because of low self employed income) then you are eligible to apply. This does not mean that you will get it though.

Hope this helps.

Thanks David for replying. At the end of your response you said that does not mean you will get it though.

What would be the reasons as to why you then would not get Maternity Allowance.

Regards
