Business expenses from a previous year

Can a self-employed individual claim business expenses against tax in the tax year 2010-2011 that were incurred in the previous tax year but not claimed?  I've looked at the Self Assessment guidelines on expenses and it does not make any reference to this.  Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

Many thanks

Hi Debbie
Yes they can still claim it so long as you have the receipts to prove it and that the expenditure was wholly and exclusively used in the course of the trade/business.

Hi Debbie

I concur with Angie, I have just done an HMRC course on Expenses and the tutor was asked this very question! He quite categorically said you could reclaim the previous year as long as you had the VAT receipts and as Angie said, they can be proved to be wholly and exclusively used  for the business.

Cheers

Thanks Carrie and Angie for your replies.  It was the answer that I was expecting, but just wanted to be certain.

Debbie

I would just check with HMRC on the expenses you wish to carry back as there may be rules on how far back certain expenses can go in order to be carried back.

Kind regards
Stuart
