Hi Stuart

I think you may have some competition in the rest of the UK for that title.  But well done I know it takes a lot to organise things.

I hope you don,t mind some Scottish Feedback, just thought you mind find some ideas helpful or maybe notl.

Michelle , Frasier and Myself , volunteers in Scotland and the members felt that going forward in Scotland we would really like to co-ordinate our events together to cover speakers, practical bookkeeping and anything any one would like to cover and Informal Support and Back up and guidance .

One of the first things I would like to mention is that it is up to all the members of the branch to try and help each other out otherwise it becomes  far to much work for one person.

We have set up a email for example in Scotland to cover the below till there is a private messaging service . To try and get more members involved and to post ideas on the forum are if you feel more comfortable email us below.  We know no one wants their email all over the forum. So we have set up a shared email address and we will endeavour to contact you .

Email:  icbscotlandbranch@gmail.com

At the meeting we discussed that times are never going to suit everyone , whether it is because of children , clients in the morning ,clients in the afternoon, and members working in the evening. We feel for the future that events will need to take place at various times all through the year .  ie Morning afternoon and Evening

Michelle had a meeting on the 25th May at the East kilbride Tax office in the afternoon 2.00 and most people did not leave till 6.30  and it was a big success everyone went for coffee afterwards and stayed for a number of hours and there was a great turnout and everyone had a great chat informally like LIz F here has mentioned she would like .

Like your selfs we have concerns about some of the standards of the bookkeepers and as Liz says the difficulty of getting experience.

The next meeting we had was on the morning of the 2nd June 2011 again a great turnout and it covered practical bookkeeping covering the area in detail with training notes. about Fixed assets and the Disposal of, understanding depr and training session on sage with a number of laptops brought along by members and used the sage practice company , how to do the double entries for the above .    We could share are notes between branches.

As well as Michelle organising meets . As a fellow, with the help of other members  for the next practical bookkeeping meeting we are going to cover the Supply of Audit Folder/ Financial Statement to an accountant and all the reports required and double checks for accuracy and professional paperwork.   After that we are going to cover the bank rec and not just checking the numbers are correct but the wider picture checking the creditors and debtors also and not reconciling payments on accounts with no invoices to match.

It was just to show how covering the practical and getting experience could be followed.

We also have made a decision of the central belt group,   that in the current climate where some members are struggling Financially and are students that we will have a kitty fund for donations , so members can donate when and if they can.   Of course this is open to abuse , but collectively we feel this is the way we want to go and if the kitty runs out , they we will bring it up at a meeting.   One of the members saved us money by making all the sandwiches instead of paying for catering .  And I think it is fair to say it was very much appreciated and are kitty is in good order.  Liz F because of the way we booked our room we had catering facilities all morning and jaffa cakes and biscuits went around many times.

We are wanting to make sure that no members feel that they cannot come.  Recession is a time when we need to look after and help each other.   The feeling of being on your own came up and was quite a discussion because everyone was just so honest.

Anyway Stuart and London it was just to say the way we were going and hope it helps with some ideas.

Sorry Stuart I have been ill for most of the week!

I thought the meeting was brilliant and I really enjoyed meeting other bookkeepers and getting their point of view on certain issues.

I found the venue a little difficult to find as I got lost! Lol. But I know where it is for next time.

I find it might have been a little more organised if there had been an agenda arranged beforehand perhaps?

I agree with LizF in that I was also starving as I had come straight from work!

I also agree with LizF on gaining experience, it is difficult and it was very difficult also for me to find someone who would give me a chance. I think if the more experienced bookkeepers did train the less experienced that would definitely help, but the question is, how many people are willing to do this considering competition, time, cost etc.?

Also, following on from what Sarah said, if we could arrange some meetings to be in the daytime, some in the evening/afternoon etc so that more members can attend?

I hope I have made sense as I'm still not feeling 100%!

Hi Stuart,

Probably as the newest student member I was anxious initally that I would be the only student member.  It was good to hear everyones views.  It would be useful to hear what people think about the various home learning options.  You mentioned one Stuart but was not happy to divulge the name to the assemble group.....have I gone with the right one!

Anyway I found it useful and hope to be at others depending on my present employment.  Looking forward to completing my qualifiactions and set up in Practice so that I can leave the rat race of a Footsie 100 Accounts software house after 23 years and work for myself.

See you all at the next event

Hi all

Good to meet up again and put some faces to forum entries!  Thank you Stuart!

Agree with Lady M on some sort of agenda prearranged.  Perhaps a part aimed more for the student's benefits, a short break to chat and then a section with issues more relevant for MIPs.

Didn't mind the venue personally.  I suppose if central London is too awkward for some we could try going around the city, NW London, SE London etc.

@LizF
That would be a fine contribution!  But would you do marmite sarnies?Wink

Stuart - I emailed you a week or so back about alternate venues but haven't had a reply - has your spam filter eaten my message?

I have to apologise I booked to go the event but at the last minute got tied up finishing some month end accounts -didn't finish till 7:00 pm by which time it was to late.

It sounds like it went well, I wish I could have there.

I will be attending the next one location not a problem.

HI Stuart and Liz

Is there any chance you can share your feedback on your master class for files going to accountants (Begging PLease )  .    I think you will be having that meeting before us in Glasgow and Edinburgh.  I am also preparing the training notes.  I will share my branch notes with you on the Depreciation and disposal we covered at Glasgow Central Branch meeting. Please Please.  I know you won,t mind Liz .

Frasier Reid who sits on  the council has suggested to me that all the members should bring to the table best practices and requests that various accountants for that meeting when we have it . So I could follow the topic up on the next meet.   I thought that is a excellent  idea.
