I would like to start a group for central Birmingham. Currently we have 3 areas covered - southwest based on Worcs/Herefordshire,  northwest based on Cannock, and southeast based on Solihull/Warwickshire.  Anyone interested.

Hi Ken,

I may well be interested, as I mentioned at the last SE meeting. I'm based just north of Lichfield and have been attending the NE group, but may well be interested in the Birmingham one as well.

We've now got a new Birmingham City Group arranged - First meeting is Wednesday 2nd November 2011 at "The Crescent Theatre" Sheepcote Street (just off Broad Street and by the NIA). Start time of 7.30pm (so please be early) and I can email the agenda out to anyone who wishes? Room has cost us £30 to hire so we will unfortunately have to ask for a nominal contribution from all attendees (the more people, the less cost :-) ) - oh and I've been told the theatre bar will be open that night too

You should be able to book on the ICB website as usual

Look forward to seeing you all there
Take care

Sarah

Hiya, The agenda is almost finalised as we've been waiting for a couple of confirmations so I anticipate emailing it out on Friday or Saturday, 28th Oct/29th Oct. I have now had final confirmation from Mr Simpson of his attendance and that he will say a few words and I've also re-confirmed the venue again today. Martin Fydes has also kindly offered to say a few words to us as he has built a new "Wiki" site for the city group to give us a way to communicate with each other and he is going to give a brief demonstration of how we use it too. Anyone is welcome to attend and give as much or as little as they want so please do come along. The agenda is quite full for this meeting but I would agree with Ken that 1.5-2 hours is about right. If any particular topic needs further discussion we can move it to a lengthier slot in the next meeting if time is pressing We do still need a volunteer to take some brief notes so we can all refresh on what was discussed if anyone is interested in offering their services? Thanks so much for all your support and we look forward to seeing you all there. Don't forget to book in on the ICB site Take care Sarah

Great first meeting with 10 members present and lots of networking, questions and answers.  Informative presentation from Peter Simpson of Bache Brown Accountants that generated much discussion.  Next meeting set for 12 January at The Crescent Theatre.

Hi everyone, Unfortunately the committee rooms at the Crescent are unavailable on the 1st March but they are free on the 15th....as such I have booked the space and look forward to confirming with them that this is acceptable to the group. Any thoughts on this? Thank you for a good attendance last week and the apologies from those who were unable to attend. As Ken mentioned we did spend some time discussing HMRC at the last meeting and to that end I have some exciting news in that I have heard back from a contact who used to be a senior member of the vat team at HMRC and who is now employed by one of the biggest accounting firms in the West Midlands as their director of vat. I approached him with a view to him joining us at a meeting and giving a presentation, some examples of pitfalls bookkeepers fall into for us to go through and then a question and answer session and I am happy to say that he has gladly accepted our invitation and is looking forward to joining us. He is actually available on the 15th March to come along and as such I would like to ask him to join us as this is a truly exciting opportunity for us to listen to and speak with a renowned vat expert from the area. I would like to invite him to our next meeting if the group agree as I personally think this an outstanding opportunity for both experienced members and those starting out to chat with someone who is font of knowledge relating to all things vat and strongly recommend that if you can make it to the next meeting to please do try and come along.....and bring any questions or thoughts you may have. Look forward to the group's/other members responses.... Thanks again and look forward to seeing you on the 15th Take care Sarah :-)

Hiya,

Just a quick post to let you know that I've now had definate confirmation of attendance for our next meeting on the 15th March from the vat expert I approached.

He is ex-HMRC and was head hunted to become "Director of Vat Services" at one of the biggest firms of accountants here in the West Midlands and I'm particularly pleased that he has agreed to join us to give us his time and some insight into his experiences.

He going to give us an introduction and brief talk and also offer some examples of various pitfalls and challenges we bookkeepers find ourselves in and then is open to Q&A

He's asked for an idea of how many will attend so he can bring appropriate copies of  the discussion examples so if you've not booked yet it might be an idea to jump on the website and book your place sooner rather than later.

I cannot emphasise how useful this meeting may be and it is an ideal opportunity to bring anything that you are unsure of or just want a bit of confirmation of.

We will also have the company of our 'resident accountant', Pete Simpson, a director of "Bache Brown and Co" (a local accountancy practice who were short-listed to the final 5 in the ICB accountancy practice of the year awards last year). He will be available for any queries or advice as usual.

Looking forward to seeing you all there
Take care
Sarah

Hi Laura,
No problem in bringing your friend along. We've got a couple of people who are mid-application coming also so it's not a problem.

See you next week

Great meeting with a most knowledgable speaker. Very well attended and we all know now that VAT is a very very complex subject - more technical lectures like this needed to keep us on track.
