coming off state benefit to start work as a bookkeeper

Hi everyone

Does anyone know about the transition from benefits to working? At the moment my family is on benefits and I want to start work running my own practice, after obtaining my practice lisence of course, but this is where my trouble starts. I can't advertise for business unless I have a practice lisence and imdemnity insurance, but would the DWP then say I am self employed and can no longer claim benefit .As I have no clients I would have no money coming in to run the house and I have no savings to live off while I'm waiting for clients. Help please!

Thanks

Hi Della, This is a bit tricky, the best thing to do would be to try and have a chat with someone at say, the job centre and pick their brains. My hubby is self employed and we still get tax credits etc becasue his income still falls in the thresholds. Im guessing that if you registered self employed you would loose one sort of benefit but gain another until your income was high enough to not qualify for it.
Im sorry i cant be more help, you really need to have a chat with someone with more knowledge.
all the best

Thanks Fiona that was my first thought but last time I asked jobcentre for help, I needed a loan, you know no interest from the DWP, I was conned by the guy there into having a bank loan for £3000 and with interest it came to £5000. The guy was in cahoots with someone at the bank and it wasn't until some time after I realised I been had, my fault I suppose I signed on the dotted line, still paying it off!

Hi Della,

Another way to find out about your situation may be to ring or contact online the HMRC, you have to rgister as self employed with them and they may be the people who decide when you are "officially" self employed and what your entitlements will be. They work very closely together with DWP and exchange info all the time. HMRC also don't have any "agenda" to get people off benefits asap and will just tell you the facts. They may also have some booklets or other info they could send you to help make the decision.

Hope this helps, best of luck.

Sue

hi i have just done this myself 2 months ago, because your income was zero last year you will be entitled to full working tax and child tax credits as long as you say you wil be doing 16 hrs a week, you will get up £ 250 from the jobcentre because you are going back to work that is if you were unemployed for over 6months plus if you are a single parent going back to work to do 16hrs week you are entitled to £40 a week for 52 weeks neither of these will affect what you get from workin and child tax credits, you just sign off and say you are going self emplyed to set up your own business, dont forget to apply for a NIC exhemption as you wont be earning enough to have to pay it and also to apply for your U.T.R number. i dont know if you know but when you apply for your practice licence you have to send off your insurance cover note with the application , and the trouble i came across was finding a compnay that will do proffessional imdemnity by monthly direct debits there isnt one  well there is but you have to pay double for the service, simply business i found was the cheapest so the amount i paid was just about do able , as your staring on your own your insurance has to be minimum of £50.000 cover, dont bother with the extras as you wont need tham at the moment. GOOD LUCK if you want anymore advice im at aaradiabookkeeping@live.co.uk i have done hours worth what with setting up my own website for free and free advertisets so if you want any help please feel free to drop me a line about anything x x x

Hi just seen this post if your thinking of this and have been for example on long term sick get in touch with Remploy or shaw Trust they will tell you what is available in your area personally i would go for Shaw Trust they will do everything to advice also get some start up business advice.  Job centre you need to get the best person i.e disability officer.
You will need to set up a business plan How this helps

Hello all.

I have seen there a few of you out there that are in the same boat as me. The master plan is to run my own bookkeeping business and leave state benfits behind. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Craig

Hi Jason, I am also thinking of joining ICB and becoming self employed, and would appreciate some info, if you wouldn't mind? Thank-you. Sarah.

Just to add to Daisy's comment:  plus if you are a single parent going back to work to do 16hrs week you are entitled to £40 a week for 52 weeks

this is not just for single parents but applies to anyone who has been out of work and claiming ESA (Employment and Support Allowance). Make sure you ask the Job Centre about Return to Work Credit - believe me they don't advertise it!!
