AAT Accounts Level 3 (Passed in 2009) - Which route should I take?

Hello, hoping I can get some advice.

I passed AAT Level 3 NVQ in 2009.  My current employer is about to retire and I am looking at options to become a self employed bookkeeper.  I have been working as a bookkeeper in my current role for 6 years.

From reading both AAT and ICB sites I do not think I qualify for exemptions as my qualification is too old.  AAT do not recognise it to become AATQB so I would need to take AAT Bookkeeping Advanced.

My employer is a one man band and I don't think he would qualify to be a reference for work experience though I am wondering if the Accountant I produce our accounts for would be able to do this?

Please, any advice as to the best route to take to be self employed.  I am willing to learn from home and have just bought all the AAT Foundation Bookkeeping books to get up to speed on format of learning, exams etc as it has been a long time since I last studied.

Any advice gratefully received.  Thank you for reading

Hi Viv,

Although your AAT qualifications are too old to apply for exemptions, you can still apply if you have two consecutive years of relevant bookkeeping work experience within the last 5 years. Your nominated reference must be someone who has worked with you in a professional capacity and cannot be a relative or be in a personal relationship with you. Your application should state their qualifications and relationship to you. If your employer or the accountant you work with matches the criteria then they should be able to provide you with the appropriate reference.

You can find out more about the ICB exemption route on our website here.

Please feel free to call or email us with any queries you have.

Kind regards,

Iris
