Looking for a Job

Hi all, I am looking for a part time work at the moment. My previous worked here was a Administration clerk for 2 years. I completed my BS Accountancy degree in the Philippines which is equivalent to UK Naric svq level 4.

I think is not accoutable in the UK in terms of job experienced???

Kind Regards.

Good Morning Marilou

Like yourself, I will be looking for work and have seen accounting apprenticeships advertised. They seem to be offered by training providers with placements in industry. Nearly all of them are based on training to achieve AAT qualifications - so you could be looking at three years to get your Level 4. Also, whilst on the apprenticeship most companies only pay the national minimum wage.

Perhaps, we just need to setup as self employed, provide services to individuals or accountants and learn on the job.

Regards

Greetings,

Hopefully anyone have a brilliant idea with regards of my situation.

I am looking for a job at the moment, I'm a bit worried because  I dont have experience in the UK as a Bookkeeper,  but my previous worked here was a Administration clerk for 2 years. I also had a previous experience in the Philippines as Accounts Assistant. I completed my BSAccountancy degree in the Philippines but it was long time ago, which is equivalent to UK Naric n/svq level 4, I think is not accoutable in the UK in terms of job experienced.

I am thinking to apply for apprenticeships just to get some work experience in the field of Bookkeeping in the UK.

What you think guys? Is that the best option for me to do?

Thank you in advance.

Kind Regards.

Hi Marilou,

My advice to you is just be confident in looking for work and proved to your would be employer that you  can do the job better than your competitor.  You have mentioned that you have have an accountancy qualification in the Philippines and that's got a SVQ level 4 equivalent in the UK.  That's a big deal already.  You also, got a UK experience for 2 years as an Administration clerks, backed by ICB qualification.  I would say, you are in the right track girl.  The concept of accounting is the same no matter what part of the world you are.

I am also like you.  I am a CPA by profession and an auditor back in the Philippines.  Back then, finding the right job for me is not easy, but I am proud to say, I am where I am because of my background.   I took ACCA route and got exempted on some papers and passed on some, but I did not pursue to finish it as I have got young children.   I transferred qualification to ICB as I would like to set up my own business and I am passionate with accounting.  I am currently full time Finance Officer in my workplace and running my own practice at the same time.

If you would like to get in touch with me you can email me thru j.thompsonbookkeeping@gmail.com

regards

Jayrissa

Hi All,

Follow reading all your posts, I thought I'd add my thoughts, & my current similar struggles to the mix

Back in 2008 I qualified with ICB L2, Manual & computerised, Looked for work, but unable to find anything as all jobs I was applying for wanted someone with experience,  & I kept thinking to myself how am I ever going to get any experience if no one allows me a foot in the door to gain such experience??? ..... So I plodded on with the day job as ambulance driver (totally unrelated to Bookkeeping)

Until a personal berreavement in Apr 2010, where I had a 2yr gap year where I tried setting up my own business, Networking in the morning's & evenings, and where ever possible, but still unsuccessful, the people I spoke to all said that they either had an accountant already or they have just signed upto an accounting firm, or if it was an accounting firm I was talking to, they were not recruiting at that present time. I sent my CV with list of new qualifications to all the accountants in my local area (5mile radius of my address) still no joy. So in Mar 2012 I returned to the day job, & moved upto Ambulance controller, and applied myself to the job in hand.

More recently I have found out that my current qualifications had expired in 2011, I was Shocked to say the least,  I didnt think qualifications had an expiry date like food, so now Im hitting the books again L2 to restudy & requalify, this time Im not going to stop at L2, I want to progress through to L3 & L4 right to the top, its a little bit more difficult this time around a day job but I'll get there!!

I have been thinking of internship? would this be the route to go down? as applying for graduate positions in my mid-late 30's just doesnt seem appropriate, I want to side step from my current position as an ambulance controller into bookkeekping & accounancy and climb my dream career ladder, not step down the career ladder any further...... I'm even willing to volunteer in accounantancy companies to gain the experience I require, on my days off from my main job

I feel like Im stuck in a rut in my current position, but also in a catch 22 situation, as I dont have the experience to side step like I would like to.

Any advise / comment's / suggestions.... much appreciated

Good Luck job hunting, Fingers crossed for all of us

Regards

Hi Donna,

Internships tend to be unpaid or low paid work experience for new graduates so possibly not applicable if your now in your mid-30's.

Also I'm not sure if doing qualifications aimed at those wanting to be self-employed e.g ICB is exactly what you are after if you want 'to side step from my current position as an ambulance controller into bookkeekping & accounancy and climb my dream career ladder, not step down the career ladder any further'

Go and visit a couple of recruitment agents, ask them what qualifications employers are looking for, it may well be that something like AAT is more suitable for you - and if they would be able to give you the odd day's temp work to build up some experience.

Thanks Simone,

Advice much appreciated, I will look into reruitment agencies, I doubt none will take me on ATM as im not yet qualified again, once I am I will, but I am looking long term into going self emplyed, short term I wanted to get a couple of years experience under my belt, before branching out into the self emplyed world

I better get my head in the books, once again many thanks for the advice

Regards

Donna
