Hi All,
Follow reading all your posts, I thought I'd add my thoughts, & my current similar struggles to the mix
Back in 2008 I qualified with ICB L2, Manual & computerised, Looked for work, but unable to find anything as all jobs I was applying for wanted someone with experience, & I kept thinking to myself how am I ever going to get any experience if no one allows me a foot in the door to gain such experience??? ..... So I plodded on with the day job as ambulance driver (totally unrelated to Bookkeeping)
Until a personal berreavement in Apr 2010, where I had a 2yr gap year where I tried setting up my own business, Networking in the morning's & evenings, and where ever possible, but still unsuccessful, the people I spoke to all said that they either had an accountant already or they have just signed upto an accounting firm, or if it was an accounting firm I was talking to, they were not recruiting at that present time. I sent my CV with list of new qualifications to all the accountants in my local area (5mile radius of my address) still no joy. So in Mar 2012 I returned to the day job, & moved upto Ambulance controller, and applied myself to the job in hand.
More recently I have found out that my current qualifications had expired in 2011, I was Shocked to say the least, I didnt think qualifications had an expiry date like food, so now Im hitting the books again L2 to restudy & requalify, this time Im not going to stop at L2, I want to progress through to L3 & L4 right to the top, its a little bit more difficult this time around a day job but I'll get there!!
I have been thinking of internship? would this be the route to go down? as applying for graduate positions in my mid-late 30's just doesnt seem appropriate, I want to side step from my current position as an ambulance controller into bookkeekping & accounancy and climb my dream career ladder, not step down the career ladder any further...... I'm even willing to volunteer in accounantancy companies to gain the experience I require, on my days off from my main job
I feel like Im stuck in a rut in my current position, but also in a catch 22 situation, as I dont have the experience to side step like I would like to.
Any advise / comment's / suggestions.... much appreciated
Good Luck job hunting, Fingers crossed for all of us
Regards
Donna Johnson
