I am due to go on maternity leave in February but aim to set up my own business about 6 months into my maternity leave. Am I able to claim maternity pay and still earn money through my own business ?

Hi

I was planning to leave my options open by remaining employed and taking 12 months maternity. I am planning on using my time off to try and start my own business, if this does not generate enough income then I will return to work and run my own business, if I can generate enough income I will hand in my notice after my 12 months maternity.

I was unsure if my maternity pay would be effected if I ran my business as a sole trader and didn't take out any drawings from the business whilst I was being paid maternity pay.

Thanks James, I have just passed level 3 manual and about to start working my way through level 2 computerised. I was planning on applying for full membership and practice licence next year when I will have hopefully completed the course.
