Advice to a novice!

Hi Everyone,

Just after a bit of advice.

I am doing the Kaplan Associate package which includes Level 1 and 2 manual and level 2 computerised.

I'm just wandering what exactly I will be able to do eventually? Is this enough to set up on your own or do you need further qualifications to do this?

Also, how do you go about getting clients if you have only done certain qualifications and not others such as payroll. Obviously you can then only do certain things so would your client need another book keeper to do these things in which case they are less likely to hire you.

I am only coming to the end of level 1 and the moment so still have a lot to learn but I would love to eventually start up on my own.

Also do those who have started up on their own work from home have you rented / brought an office space to work from?

Sorry for all the questions!

Yes you will be able to set up when you've finished your course. Most of my clients are ltd's and have accountants so the work is to TB. If I didn't have payroll it wouldn't have really affected me, only 1 client wanted payroll as well the others have started their PAYE after I started with them so its a bonus. I have only 1 client I do just payroll for, if I lived closer I would do their books as well.

I have yet to advertise, most of my work as come from my website. I work from home and go to a few clients premises and work for there.

Good luck

Hi Becky,

I setup about a year ago, and work from home.  I have considered renting office space many times, but when I add up the rent, utilities, phone, braodband, insurance etc it doesn't really make sense for me right now.  I bought a lodge for my garden which is my office for now and I'm happy there.  The problem will come when I look to employ staff, which I think will be within the next year or so.

I didn't have payroll training when I set up, and didn't lose any work through not having it.  I have it now, but have not actively offered the services and I think if anyone asked for it, I would look to outsource it.  Far more important I found was self assessment.  This is a money spinner, I have dealt with a number of landlords this year who let property.  The work is quick and easy, and the money is great.

Regarding advertising there are a number of things you can do.  These range from the simple stuff like postcards in shops/post offices to having your car signwritten and newspaper ads.  The one thing I have never found particularly appealing, and from what I gather I'm not the only one, is Yell or yellow pages.  I find it's better if you can provide small business owners with something useful if you choose to send letters or leaflets.  For instance I am in the middle of having car airfresheners printed up to send to all the local driving instructors.  If you send leaflets provide useful information that makes the recipient want to keep it handy.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi everyone

I have recently qualified at level II Computerised and Manual.  I am using the qualification to run our own family business, but also am seeking to extend my experience by taking on other clients as well.  I have subscribed to Yell and have a website with them.  I have also taken my business card around to potential clients.  As yet I have had no enqiries (after 4 weeks).  My next step has been to have flyers printed through the ICB contacts and templates.  Does anyone have experience of putting on an event such as a presentation followed by tea and biscuits:?  I feel that it would be good to take a more interactive approach.

regards

heather
