VAT on expenses - zero rates, exempt and no vat

Hi,

Is there a reference point for vat rates on expenses e.g. milk for the office, a subscription from the States, meals and drink (employee travel) etc. I've tried searching on HMRC but can't find what I'm looking for. Just wondered if there was a handy reference guide?

Thanks

Hi Angie

As starting point use http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/forms-rates/rates/rates.htm it explains the difference between standard, reduced and zero VAT rates plus exempt and outside of scope.

However if you are talking about VAT on receipts/invoices you receive from suppliers then it should be clearly stated on the receipt/invoice. If you purchase subcriptions from the USA then according to the guide it is outside of scope, milk is zero rated but some drinks are not - there is a link in the guide.

Hi Blueberry/Angie,

I would be helpful to clarify where those expenses incurred. In uk or abroad?
